Why Pests May Be Attracted to Your Home

Pests at Home Yuck! You’ve found another roach, or you’ve discovered termites in the bathroom. Not sure what you’re doing wrong? Here’s why pests may be attracted to your home.

You don’t store food properly

Let’s start with the basics. Pests are always attracted to food—including crumbs on the floor, counter spills, any pet food that’s left out, fruit in a bowl and, of course, garbage. Sweep, mop and vacuum regularly, making sure to get into all the corners. Make sure to store all food, including pet food, in tightly sealed containers.

Your home is cluttered

You’d never let takeout containers pile up, and you sweep the kitchen religiously. So why do you still have pests? You may not have known this, but pests are attracted to piles of clutter even if they don’t contain food, because they provide great places to burrow and hide.

You mulch your yard

Mulch may seem innocuous, but it can serve as a food and moisture source for termites, whose next move will be—you guessed it—your home. Limit your use of wood mulch and keep it 15 inches or more from your home’s foundation.
