Fleas can make your pet (and you) completely miserable. Not only will your dog be scratching nonstop, but you could wind up with a nasty infestation in your carpets and furniture.
If you suspect your dog might have fleas, here’s how to check:
Know the signs
Use a flea comb
At a pet store, you’ll be able to find a special comb to use to check your pooch for fleas. Comb through your dog’s hair slowly, checking for live fleas or flea feces after each stroke.
Have a bowl of soapy water nearby
Not sure whether you’ve found flea feces or regular old dirt? Place it in a bowl of warm, soapy water. If it turns red, it’s a telltale sign your pup has fleas. Live fleas should be placed in the water as well in order to kill them.
Check the hot spots
While fleas can be found anywhere on your dog’s body, they like to congregate in the neck area and groin, around leg folds and near the base of the tail.
Make sure to check furniture and carpets for fleas as well.
