Mites are among the most varied and successful pests due to their small size and subsequent ability to infiltrate and thrive in a variety of environments almost unnoticed. Many live in the soil or water and are not harmful to animals or humans, but a lot also are able to thrive on plants, animals and mold as parasites. The best known mite species is probably the house dust mite.
Dust mites are responsible for many health issues associated with allergies such as hay fever, asthma, and eczema. They usually live in warm and humid areas such as beds. The first method of treatment for mites is avoidance: regular washing of bed linens and mattresses with hot water can help in this regard.
